Call for next government to fund transition for oil and gas workers

Over 60 climate organisations and trade unions have urged the next government to fund a transition plan for offshore oil and gas workers

More than 60 climate organisations and leading trade unions have called on the next government to provide a “clear and funded” transition plan for workers in the offshore oil and gas industry, including those in the North Sea.

An open letter, addressed to all party leaders on Thursday, emphasised the need for a UK-wide industrial strategy.

The signatories, including Greenpeace, Oxfam and Friends of the Earth, highlighted several key demands.

They are advocating for substantial investment in domestic manufacturing and skills, the expansion of publicly owned energy, and a reorganisation of the tax system to benefit the public good.

The groups also urged the next government to expand sectoral collective bargaining across the energy industry and its supply chain.

Additionally, they are calling for a jobs guarantee to ensure that every oil and gas worker can find equivalent alternative employment or receive funded retraining.

In their letter, the climate organisations and unions expressed solidarity with the workers and emphasised the importance of supporting those affected by the transition to a greener economy.
