Zero-emissions ferry to link South Coast and Isle of Wight

Red Funnel and Artemis Technologies have announced plans to launch a zero-emissions ferry, on the Southampton to West Cowes route by late 2025

Red Funnel has announced a partnership with Artemis Technologies to introduce the Artemis EF-24 Passenger ferry on its Southampton to West Cowes route by late 2025.

This move aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and aligns with global efforts to combat climate change.

The Artemis EF-24 Passenger incorporates electric e-foiling technology, lifting the vessel above water to increase efficiency and provide a smoother ride.

Initial estimates suggest it could save up to 3,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, potentially rising to 4,150 tonnes with renewable energy sources.

Preparations for testing and training are underway to integrate the Artemis EF-24 Passenger into Red Funnel’s fleet, expected to enhance travel between the South Coast and the Isle of Wight with eco-friendly technology.

Red Funnel Chief Executive Officer Fran Collins said: “This is an important step towards transitioning to a sustainable and environmentally friendly fleet that will continue to provide a lifeline service for the Isle of Wight community both now and for future generations.”

Dr Iain Percy OBE, double Olympic and multiple world champion sailor and Artemis Technologies Chief Executive Officer, added: “Air pollution impacts our health, damages quality of life, and harms our environment and oceans.

“By introducing the Artemis EF-24 Passenger, Red Funnel is taking a significant step towards mitigating these issues.”
