Newcastle theatre bags £100k for green upgrades

The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme has secured a £100,000 grant to improve energy efficiency

The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme has secured a £100,000 grant to improve its energy efficiency.

The money comes from the Green Solutions programme, run by Staffordshire County Council and the Business Energy Advice Service.

This programme helps businesses reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save on energy costs.

As part of the Green Solutions programme, the New Vic Theatre had a free energy assessment to check its energy use and find ways to cut costs and lower its carbon footprint.

After the assessment, the theatre applied for and received the full £100,000 grant.

The grant will be used to replace the large glass roof in the atrium with a thermal alternative, install double glazing to replace drafty old windows and upgrade three boilers to more energy-efficient models along with a new heating control system.

New Vic Theatre Manager David Sunnuck said: “The estimations that we have had is this will save us 68 tonnes of carbon emissions per year and 360,000 kilowatt hours of energy will be reduced as a result of this, so it’s a big impact for us.

“Through the Green Solutions project, we chose to bid for the maximum amount of £100,00 and we were very grateful and fortunate to have received the full amount, so that will go a long way to covering the costs of this work.”
