Parents worry about rising summer energy bills

Nearly a third of teenagers are actively working to reduce energy waste this summer, according to a new survey

Nearly 63% of parents are worried about rising energy bills with more people at home during summer.

However, teenagers’ efforts to save energy might help ease these concerns.

Research from Smart Energy GB shows that over a quarter (26%) of teenagers think they’re more environmentally aware than their parents and a third (33%) are actively reducing energy waste this summer.

Many are taking shorter showers (31%) and using the washing machine at lower temperatures (18%).

These ‘greenagers’ are also influencing their parents, who are now reminded to turn off lights (49%), dry clothes on the line (33%), and unplug devices (42%).

Almost a quarter (24%) of teenagers encourage their parents to check their smart meter and avoid leaving appliances on (39%), according to the survey.

This shift is having an effect, with 26% of parents saying their children have made them more aware of energy use.

Consequently, 20% of parents have installed a smart meter, saving an average of £140 over the past year.

Victoria Bacon, Director at Smart Energy GB commented: “Small, actionable changes can add up to making a real difference.

“Paired with getting a smart meter, which offers a whole range of benefits – including access to more flexible energy tariffs – families can feel more in control of their energy use and household bills, not only during summer but all-year round.”
