Britain’s electricity imports soar 80% in 2024

Britain saw an 81.7% increase in net power imports in the first half of 2024, driven by mild weather, increased French nuclear output and higher solar generation in neighbouring countries

Britain saw a big rise in net power imports in the first half of 2024, up by 81.7% from the second half of 2023, says a report by Montel Analytics.

The country imported 18.9TWh more power than it exported.

This rise was due to milder weather, more power from France because of higher nuclear output and lower demand there, and more imports from the Netherlands and Belgium due to higher solar generation in Germany and the Netherlands.

Analysts also stressed the impact of the Viking interconnector, which has been fully running since December 2023, on power flows from Denmark to Britain.

Average power flows to Britain increased from several countries: 1345MW from France, 400MW from Denmark, 230MW from Belgium, 195MW from the Netherlands and 100MW from Norway.

Exports to Ireland also went up, averaging 82MW.
