A recent survey has revealed that nearly 62% of Britons support the concept of Great British (GB) Energy, a government-owned renewable energy company.
This initiative, introduced by the Labour government is aimed at boosting the UK’s renewable energy production.
The government has already begun implementing the plan, including a partnership with the Crown Estate to construct new offshore wind turbines.
The YouGov survey, conducted with a sample of 4,252 adults between 26th and 30th July 2024, also highlighted that public support for GB Energy would be even stronger if the company not only generated renewable energy but also supplied electricity directly to consumers.
In this scenario, support rose to almost 72%, with nearly 9% of respondents opposing the idea.
When it comes to the impact on energy bills, the public appears divided.
About 29% believe GB Energy in its current form would lead to lower bills, nearly 28% think it could increase costs and almost 24% expect it to make no difference.
However, nearly 41% of those surveyed believe that an integrated energy generator and supplier would be more likely to reduce energy costs for consumers.
