Ofgem unveils new energy data sharing plan

The energy regulator is consulting on a new digital solution for managing consent in energy data sharing

Ofgem has launched a consultation on developing a digital solution for managing consumer consent related to energy data sharing.

The proposed solution aims to allow consumers to share their energy data with trusted third parties to receive personalised services for managing their energy bills.

The consultation covers the process of granting, managing, reviewing and revoking consent.

Ofgem is inviting feedback from energy industry professionals, consumer advocacy groups, third-party service providers and others with expertise in consumer protection.

Responses are also welcomed from the general public.

The consultation will review three potential bodies for delivering the consent solution: ElectraLink Ltd, the Retail Energy Code Company Ltd (RECCo) and Smart DCC Ltd (DCC).

Ofgem’s proposal is to select RECCo to develop the solution in line with the proposed design principles.

Additionally, it suggests that supply licensees should record consent granted through this solution to maintain accurate records.

The consultation period is open for eight weeks and stakeholders are asked to submit their views by 4th October 2024.

Ofgem plans to publish the decision in Winter 2024/2025.
