Water bill payouts to double for poor service

The government has proposed doubling compensation for customers when water companies fail to meet service standards

The government has proposed a plan to double compensation for customers affected by poor service from water companies.

The consultation will explore increasing payments when basic standards, such as uninterrupted water supply, are not met.

Under the proposals, compensation could also be more than doubled for certain incidents, like unannounced supply interruptions.

The consultation will also consider expanding the situations where compensation is automatically triggered, such as during boil water notices or missed appointments.

This proposal is part of a broader effort to improve accountability within the water industry.

The consultation is set to run until 7th October, with further legislation expected to follow.

Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Steve Reed said: “Our water industry is broken.

“After years of failure, households and businesses have been let down by water companies time and time again.

“The new government will clean up the water industry and turn the tide on the destruction of our waterways ensuring water companies protect the interests of their customers and the environment.”
