Elexon takes next step in boosting flexibility

Elexon has been appointed to lead ENA's Open Networks Challenge Group, aiming to improve the UK's energy flexibility market

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) has announced that Elexon will lead the Open Networks Challenge Group.

Elexon will also join the Open Networks Steering Group, which directs the programme.

This announcement follows a year of substantial growth in UK energy flexibility, with network operators tendering a record 6.4GW of capacity in local flexibility markets and contracting 4GW, nearly double the previous year’s figures.

A few months ago, Ofgem confirmed Elexon as the market facilitator for local flexibility after a recent consultation.

This appointment aims to support the government’s 2030 clean power target by enhancing the energy system‘s flexibility.

Elexon will begin its new role by early 2026, subject to the completion of three key tasks: designing the market facilitator role, updating the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC), and working with industry stakeholders to develop flexibility markets.

Elexon’s Chief Executive, Peter Stanley, said: “The Open Networks programme plays an important role in bringing together electricity grid operators to work collaboratively to speed up the connection of low carbon generation to the networks, and increase the participation of flexibility providers in local markets.”

Avi Aithal, Head of Open Networks at Energy Networks Association, said: “Incorporating Elexon’s voice into the programme will help ensure that we are fully aligned as we continue to deliver a programme that has supported the creation of a world class flexibility market.”
