UK energy demand expected to rise amid cold snap

UK power demand is expected to increase significantly due to a cold spell, with forecasts predicting a rise to 30 gigawatts, the highest level since April

Power demand in the UK is forecast to approach 30 gigawatts on Thursday and Friday, driven by a cold front across Europe.

This would be the highest demand since April, according to Bloomberg models.

Temperatures in London are expected to fall to around 6°C (43°F) on Saturday, following a week of freezing weather.

The cold spell, due to arctic air moving south, has also brought snow to Scotland.

An ESO spokesperson told Energy Live News: “The ESO has a full operational toolkit to manage network requirements year round, allowing us to safely, securely and reliably deliver electricity to meet demand in the Summer time when it can reach as low as 16GW and in the Winter when it can reach above 47GW.

“In the coming weeks the ESO will publish its Winter Outlook to support industry preparations for this winter.”
