In his first significant foreign policy speech, Foreign Secretary David Lammy has declared that Britain will lead the formation of a new Global Clean Power Alliance.
Speaking at Kew Gardens, David Lammy emphasised that climate action is central to national and global security.
“We must aim for a liveable planet for all, now and in the future,” he stated.
The Foreign Secretary underscored that the climate and nature emergencies are not separate from geopolitical and security concerns but are fundamental to them.
Addressing the scale of the climate crisis, Mr Lammy explained that the impacts are systemic and pervasive.
“The threat may not feel as urgent as a terrorist or an imperialist autocrat. But it is more fundamental. It is systemic. It’s pervasive. And accelerating towards us at pace.”
He pointed out that climate change exacerbates existing conflicts and humanitarian crises, making it a global priority.
The Foreign Secretary outlined the goals of the newly announced Global Clean Power Alliance, which aims to “accelerate the clean energy transition.”
This initiative will focus on scaling up global investment in clean energy, addressing barriers in emerging markets and advancing innovative clean technologies.
Mr Lammy highlighted that while global investment in clean energy is growing, “emerging market and developing economies outside China account for just fifteen per cent of global clean energy investment.”
