The UK Government has outlined its plans for the future of the maritime sector, with a focus on technological innovation and sustainability.
Speaking at the launch of London International Shipping Week, the Secretary of State for Transport highlighted the steps being taken to modernise the industry, particularly through autonomous ships and green energy solutions.
During her address, she stressed the importance of the maritime sector in the UK’s economy and its global influence, noting that “this sector faces more change in the next 30 years than it’s seen in the past 3,000.”
Louise Haigh also discussed the government’s efforts to reduce the industry’s reliance on fossil fuels.
Ms Haigh stated, “Britain will continue to take the lead, not only delivering our mission to make this country a clean energy superpower, but rallying the world to ensure those targets don’t slip from view.”
This includes exploring the potential of technologies such as hydrogen and battery-powered ships.
Touching on the role of autonomous ships, she emphasised that the aim is not to replace human expertise but to enhance safety and productivity.
“We’ll explore the possibilities of autonomous shipping, never to replace human passion and experience, but to achieve levels of productivity and safety currently beyond our capabilities,” she said.
