Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa, marking their first discussion since Starmer’s election.
Both leaders acknowledged the economic potential of transitioning to net zero, stating that this shift would create new industries, technologies and job opportunities.
They agreed to negotiate a new partnership focused on climate change and energy, called the Australia-UK Climate and Energy Partnership.
This initiative will promote the development and deployment of renewable energy technologies, including green hydrogen and offshore wind, to support both countries’ decarbonisation goals.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “The UK and Australia share many things in common, including our governments’ determination to improve the lives of working people, drive economic growth and ensure cleaner, more affordable energy.
“This partnership underscores our commitment to powering up the UK with clean energy projects that will benefit communities across the country.”
