Will you be forced to get a heat pump?

The short answer is no... but there are financial benefits

Despite a record-breaking 60,000 air source heat pump installations in 2024, only 1% of UK households currently use them.

The UK’s target of 600,000 annual installations by 2028 remains a distant goal, far behind European adoption rates. So will Labour force you to get one?

While 49% of UK homeowners are interested in low-carbon heating, 73% feel uninformed about heat pumps. The government has allocated £100K to a ‘nudge unit’ aimed at debunking heat pump myths.

However, this has raised concerns about whether homeowners might face mandatory adoption.

Confused.com Energy experts have looked into it and their conclusion is, don’t worry“The short answer is no – you won’t be forced to switch to a heat pump.

“While transitioning to low-carbon heating is certainly becoming central to the UK’s net-zero strategy, homeowners are not required to make the switch immediately.

“Instead, the focus is on encouraging adoption with incentives like the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which helps offset installation costs.”
