EU to report on air and noise pollution

Auditors looked at Athens, Barcelona and Krakow to see if policies are working

The levels of air and noise pollution across the EU will be looked at this week.

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a special report on pollution in EU cities.

Air and noise pollution are among the most pressing environmental and health challenges faced throughout the EU, particularly in urban areas.

More than 300 million people in the EU are estimated to be exposed to harmful pollutants in the air and around 90 million people to harmful noise levels.

EU member states are committed to tackling this with policies like The European Green Deal and Zero Pollution Action Plan – designed to produce a 55% reduction in the number of premature deaths from air pollution by 2030, when compared to 2005.

And also a 30% reduction in the number of people chronically affected by transport noise.

The audit report examines whether the measures taken by the European Commission and member states have been effective.

For their study sample, the auditors selected Athens, Barcelona and Krakow. The report will be published on Wednesday.
