Big funding for fusion!

UK fusion sector to get £410 million cash injection

The dream of limitless clean energy is one step closer as the UK’s fusion energy sector secures a record £410m investment.

This cash, part of the government’s Plan for Change, aims to fast-track development of fusion energy and kickstart economic growth.

The funds will drive innovation and expand the skills pipeline, creating opportunities for scientists, engineers, welders and programme managers to join this cutting-edge industry.

Fusion energy already supports thousands of UK jobs, with many more to follow as the sector grows.

UK Industrial Fusion Solutions (UKIFS) has shortlisted five construction and engineering bids to build a world-leading prototype fusion power plant in Nottinghamshire.

This ambitious project, set to be operational by 2040, aims to unlock a new clean energy industry and provide secure, unlimited energy to UK homes and businesses.

The plant will be built on the site of a former coal power station, revitalising an industrial heartland and delivering skilled jobs to former coal communities. It represents a bold step towards commercialising fusion energy, a transformative technology that could play a key role in decarbonising the UK.

Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said: “Britain is at the forefront of this global race to deliver fusion and today’s record level of funding will provide investment and economic growth through our Plan for Change, delivering on net zero and creating the clean energy of the future.”
