Could LEDs stop birds hitting offshore platforms?

Special green LEDs can stop migrating birds flying into turbines or onto ships and oil rigs

Offshore platforms, windfarms and ships act as unintended gambling spots for migratory birds—drawn to bright lights, so could LED lights save them?

Glamox, a leader in lighting solutions, has created a bird-friendly LED technology designed to reduce energy waste and protect wildlife.

Using innovative green LED light, Glamox’s new marine-certified luminaires provide safe working conditions for offshore crews while being significantly less attractive to migratory birds.

“Blue-green light reduces the impact on the magnetic orientation of migratory birds while red light can disrupt their internal compass,” explained Oskar Mile, the lighting designer leading the project.

The solution includes bird-friendly versions of LEDs, designed to withstand extreme offshore environments.

Beyond hardware, Glamox offers light management systems to optimise lighting, allowing offshore operators to dim or switch off unnecessary lights, particularly during peak migration periods. “If you can help people and wildlife at the same time, then it’s a win-win,” added Mile.

By cutting unnecessary light pollution, this smart bet could help offshore operators reduce emissions while safeguarding migratory species.
