Planning granted for North Somerset solar scheme

Statkraft has secured planning consent to build a 40MW Solar Farm

Statkraft has received planning consent for its 39.9 MW Kitland Solar Farm in North Somerset.

The site will generate renewable electricity to support national and local energy targets and will also include a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to manage energy demand.

The development incorporates biodiversity enhancements such as wildflower meadows, hedgerows and an orchard near Wrington.

Plans include more than 2 miles of new public rights of way. Construction, set to begin in 2027, will involve local suppliers to support the region’s economy.

The solar farm will deliver £600,000 in community benefits over its 40-year operational period.

Mark Henderson, Statkraft’s Senior Solar Project Manager, said: “Kitland Solar Farm has the potential to power the equivalent of 13,000 homes, helping to accelerate the UK towards a net zero future as well as providing local benefits such as boosting wildlife and creating new footpaths and spaces for the public to enjoy.

“I’d like to thank all those for engaging with us throughout the planning process. We are committed to being a good neighbour throughout the lifetime of the project and look forward to continuing to work with the local community.”
