EV hubs can cut connections red tape

UKPN is making it easier and faster for EV charging hubs to get connected

UK Power Networks is making it easier to build electric vehicle charging hubs with a new guide designed to cut through red tape and speed up grid connections.

As the UK’s largest electricity distribution network operator, the company processes up to 100 applications a year for EV charging sites, some requiring as much power as 2,000 homes.

But delays often arise because land consents and access agreements aren’t in place before installation starts.

The new online guide spells out exactly what permissions are needed before developers apply to connect their charging hubs to the grid.

It lays out a clear hierarchy of consents and profiles four common scenarios to help installers relate the process to their own projects.

“Having the correct access and licensing arrangements can dramatically speed up the connections process, enabling sites to be up and running in weeks rather than months,” said Neil Madgwick, Head of Connections service delivery at UK Power Networks.

The company offers a full service to manage the final grid connection, working closely with operators and independent providers from site design to energisation.

With demand for EV charging hubs soaring, UK Power Networks says it is building a library of guidance to support businesses, from small operators to large corporations, as they navigate the shift to low-carbon transport.
