Asian travellers increasingly prioritise sustainability

Tourists from India, Japan and the Phillipines prefer to book trips and tours that protect the planet

Asian tourists are thinking more about the sustainable credentials of their holidays says a new survey.

Agoda’s Sustainable Travel Survey highlights that sustainability is at the forefront of travel planning for Asian travellers, with 68% indicating it as a key consideration.

Filipino travellers are leading the way, with an impressive 86% factoring sustainability into their plans, followed closely by travellers from India, reflecting a clear regional commitment to eco-friendly tourism.

Authentic experiences and supporting local economies are significant motivations, especially for travellers from India, where 24% cite personal values as driving their sustainability choices.

In Japan, waste reduction is top priority—25% of respondents reported packing reusable items like bottles and shopping bags to reduce environmental impact.

The survey results underscore a broader shift across Asia towards more responsible and meaningful travel, with nearly a quarter of respondents expressing a preference for off-peak travel to reduce overcrowding and environmental strain.

Interestingly, only 8% of Asian travellers completely disregard sustainability in their planning.

Andrew Smith, Agoda’s Senior Vice President of Supply, highlighted travellers’ desire to “make a positive impact on destinations they love,” emphasising that sustainable travel is not only beneficial to the environment but also aligns with evolving consumer values.
