Cut your emissions for cash

Homeowners can now earn up to £2,000 for improving energy efficiency

Fancy some cash for insulating your home?

A new platform launched by Edinburgh-based energy efficiency company Snugg is offering homeowners up to £2,000 in cashback for cutting their carbon emissions through home improvements.

The innovative ‘Carbon Cashback’ scheme uses smart meter data to verify reductions and convert them into credits on the Voluntary Carbon Market.

Unveiled as part of the Government’s Green Home Finance Accelerator, the platform offers an incentive for homeowners to install upgrades like heat pumps, solar panels or insulation.

By tracking actual carbon reductions via smart meter integrations, Snugg can reward households with verified payments spread across a 10-year period.

The initiative aims to make energy-efficient home upgrades more financially viable, with over 90% of user testing participants showing interest in signing up.

As concerns grow about the affordability of Scotland’s Heat in Buildings Bill, this scheme offers a practical and attractive solution for homeowners looking to decarbonise.

The Voluntary Carbon Market is projected to fund up to 10% of the estimated £250 billion needed to decarbonise our homes.

Carbon reduction payments will begin around 18 months after enrolment, with verified savings reviewed annually.

The scheme is launching in beta with selected partners, with a wider roll-out planned for later in 2025.

Businesses that partner with the platform can offer this service to customers, gaining sustainability insights and helping reduce their Scope 3 emissions.
