NESO appointed as data player

Ofgem has asked NESO to co-ordinate the vast data sharing opportunities of smart grids

The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has been appointed by Ofgem as the Interim Data Sharing Infrastructure (DSI) Coordinator, a major step in building a smarter, more secure, and efficient energy system.

With Ofgem committed to shaping the future of DSI governance, NESO’s appointment follows extensive consultation and recognition of its expertise in whole-system coordination and innovation.

As Interim DSI Coordinator, NESO will spearhead efforts to enhance data sharing across the sector, strengthening system resilience and accelerating the energy transition.

This move builds on NESO’s pioneering work in energy system digitalisation, including the ambitious Virtual Energy System—an initiative to create a connected digital twin of Britain’s entire energy network.

By improving data sharing, NESO aims to cut inefficiencies, boost flexibility, and drive a more integrated energy system.

Effective coordination of data sharing is vital for the sector, enabling better forecasting, smarter decision-making and a more resilient, zero-carbon energy system.

NESO’s appointment marks a critical milestone in developing a unified data-sharing framework that will underpin a more dynamic and transparent energy network.

Data sharing underpins everything from system planning to market efficiency, and having a clear, coordinated approach will benefit the entire sector. We will work closely with industry to get this right, making sure the system is accessible, secure and fit for purpose.”

Shubhi Rajnish, Chief Information Officer, NESO

Working closely with Ofgem, industry, and government, NESO will lead the charge in designing and implementing a secure, interoperable framework for seamless energy data exchange.

Over the next four years, its role will expand to support a broader range of use cases, aligning with Ofgem’s long-term vision for a digital-first energy system.
