Sizewell C has awarded new UK contracts for critical road and infrastructure upgrades ahead of major construction works on the nuclear power station in Suffolk.
The project, which has already signed nearly 300 contracts worth £2.5bn, has chosen Galliford Try to build the 6.5km Sizewell Link Road and the 1.8km Two Village Bypass.
Suffolk-based Breheny Civil Engineering, will construct two new A12 roundabouts at Friday Street and Yoxford, enhancing safety and traffic flow.
These works are designed to reduce construction impact on local roads by enabling 60% of materials to be delivered via rail or sea.
Hydrogen buses and new park and ride schemes will also support low-impact logistics.
Local supply chains vital
Suffolk Chamber of Commerce chief John Dugmore praised the ongoing collaboration: “It’s vital that major developments like Sizewell C harness local supply chains. This project will leave a legacy of growth and investment in our region.”
Sizewell C site delivery director Damian Leydon said the contracts are a sign of the project’s local commitment: “These new contracts show our dedication to supporting local suppliers and delivering the infrastructure to build Sizewell C efficiently and safely.”
The Sizewell Link Road is expected to complete in 2027, bypassing Theberton and Middleton Moor, while the Two Village Bypass will reroute traffic away from Farnham and Stratford St Andrew by 2026.
Sizewell C is expected to deliver 3.2GW of low-carbon power, support 70,000 jobs, and inject £4.4bn into the East of England economy.
Around 1,000 people are currently working on site, with apprenticeships and local recruitment set to ramp up throughout construction.
