The government has announced it will develop new environmental guidance for the oil and gas sector in response to a recent Supreme Court decision.
The ruling, known as the Finch ruling, requires the environmental impact of burning oil and gas to be considered when assessing new projects.
The government intends to consult with industry stakeholders, including workers, trade unions and civil society groups, to provide clarity and stability for the sector.
The goal is to ensure that decisions on development consent align with the UK’s climate commitments while also supporting economic growth and job security.
Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said: “While we make that transition the oil and gas industry will play an important role in the economy for decades to come.
“As we support the North Sea’s clean energy future, this government is committed to protecting current and future generations of good jobs as we do so.”
