Amazon trials innovative battery technology

Amazon has partnered with Swiss battery startup Unbound Potential to trial a new membrane-less redox flow battery

Amazon is testing a new battery technology to meet its energy storage needs in collaboration with Unbound Potential, a Swiss startup participating in the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator.

Unbound Potential has developed a membrane-less redox flow battery that offers several advantages over conventional lithium-ion batteries, including the absence of critical raw materials, a longer shelf life, and greater cost-effectiveness for stationary applications.

The specific location for the pilot project and its launch timeframe are currently being determined.

This energy storage solution addresses a significant challenge for Amazon: limited solar energy utilisation due to the company’s round-the-clock operations.

Once the trial is complete, Amazon will evaluate the environmental impact, financial viability, and overall effectiveness of the battery technology to decide whether it can be scaled across other sites as part of a long-term partnership.
