COP out once more? My take on the future of the climate talks

In this week's Net Hero Podcast I explore the challenges affecting COP29

In this week’s podcast I look at the on-going COP29 talks in Baku.

In my view the sheer number of major players who are not there makes this COP a bit of a lame duck. Are we really going to get any action without the leaders of the USA, China, India, Brazil and the defacto head of the EU in attendance?

The podcast was recorded before Kier Starmer’s bold pledge to set the UK’s emissions goal of 81% of net zero by 2035! You can read his speech here. Bold it is, commendable too, however it will commit us to a massive amount of spending and push the energy and transport sectors to the limit.

But whatever we do, if the aim of this COP is to get the developing nations the financial help to decarbonise, it will not work. The fact that for the second COP in a row, the host nation is a massive petro-state with oil and gas plentiful, has also really irked the green critics.

So what are we to do, listen to the episode now as I give my take, let me know if you agree or disagree!
